Balram Bhargava, director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (1), confirmed on Tuesday that the Covishield vaccine trials have started. The University of Oxford and Astrazeneca have jointly developed the Covishield COVID-19 vaccine. For phase 2 and 3 clinical trials with around 1,600 participants, ICMR is the secondary sponsor.

In clinical trials, sites can begin screening and patient enrolments after getting the ethics committee approval of the hospital. Out of the 14 locations for Oxford COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials, seven hospitals have received the ethical committee’s approval as per the clinical trial registry of the Indian government.

The seven hospitals that have received the ethical committee’s approval include BVDU, Jehangir Clinical Development Center, KEM Hospital, King George Hospital, Rajendra Memorial Research Institute of Medical Sciences. All of these hospitals are soon to start the patient screening by the end of the week. As per an anonymous source, the hospital will begin giving vaccine doses to patients about 2 to 3 days after the approval.

Serum Institute India to Supply 1 Billion Oxford COVID-19 Doses

Earlier in June, Serum Institute has signed an agreement with AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical company. Notably, the Serum Institute is the largest vaccine manufacturer globally by volume. As per the agreement, the Serum Institute would provide an additional 1 billion doses for low and middle-income countries.

The company has secured the Indian drug regulator’s regulatory approval to conduct phase II and III clinical trials. Serum Institute is the third firm to conduct human tests of the COVID-19 vaccine in India. In the previous month, Bharat Biotech, Covaxin, and Zydus Cadila for ZyCoV-D initiated the phase I and II clinical trials last month.

The interim data of a clinical study of the Oxford vaccine showed that it was safe and provided dual immunity for highly infectious diseases in respiratory. The data were published last month in The Lancet journal (2).

To support the coronavirus vaccine’s manufacturing of the University of Oxford and Novavax at the Serum Institute of India, Bill Gate’s foundation; the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide the 150 million USD fund. However, the condition of at-risk funding is that the firm prices the two vaccines at 3 USD per dose at a maximum.

Salesforce is in talks to acquire Slack, an enterprise software platform that allows teams and businesses. The deal could be announced as soon as next week, according to news first the Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the matter.

If the deal goes through, Slack would be Salesforce’s largest acquisition. The total amount of the deal is still unclear at this point. However, Slack’s market cap skyrockets to more than $20 billion following the WSJ’s original report.

Salesforce has been on an acquisition spree lately. In 2018, Salesforce acquired MuleSoft for $6.5 billion, the company’s biggest deal ever at the time, to help connect cloud applications. The following year it spent more than twice that amount on Tableau, acquiring the data visualization company for $15.3 billion. Below is Salesforce’s top ten acquisitions.

The acquisition of Slack would be one of the biggest software deals ever for the tech industry. It would rank among Microsoft’s $27 billion purchase of LinkedIn in 2016 and Facebook’s $19 billion purchase of WhatsApp in 2014.

“This would be a game-changer move for Benioff & Co. to further build out its collaboration engine and product footprint as cloud spending ramps across the enterprise,” Wedbush Securities’ Dan Ives told CNBC, referring to Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

Founded in 2009 by Cal Henderson, Eric Costello, Serguei Mourachov, and Stewart Butterfield, Slack is a popular workplace chat app that allows teams and businesses of all sizes to communicate effectively. The slack software platform is used by global Fortune 100 companies.

Localz, a Melbourne, Australia-based tech startup that provides digital customer engagement for small businesses, today announced it has raised £2 million in funding to further develop its product portfolio to support businesses with new safety measures and procedures as well as putting a customer-centric approach to services post-COVID. The venture round was led by London-based investment manager Triple Point.

Founded in 2013 Melvin Artemas, Peter Williams, and Tim Andrew, Localz is a real-time digital customer engagement platform combining real-time location tracking with two-way customer communications through a suite of configurable modules and apps. Its focus is making the day of service awesome with solutions for order collection, service delivery, and product delivery. Its location technology and automated communication workflows take the complexity out of last-mile interactions, all the while providing excellent customer experiences.

With an ever-growing impressive client list including RAC, OVO Energy, Autoglass, and Rentokil, and platform partners such as FieldAware, Masternaut, Salesforce, and ServiceMax, Localz has seen a surge in demand for its services since the start of the pandemic. With contactless services and delivery becoming the new norm, organizations are seeking support from Localz to deliver essential information in relation to safety and service updates, as well as providing the technology to support virtual queue systems and contactless delivery.

Localz has recently launched its ‘Count Me In’ solution which provides real-time counting of customers for retailers to safely monitor in-store traffic. With the new funding, Localz is now further developing its solutions to support field services and retailers accelerate their digital strategies and adapt to new and enhanced ways of operating.

“There has been an unprecedented amount of pressure on organizations, in particular those who work in the retail and services industry. Health and safety of customers and employees need to be at the forefront but there is also heightened demand for good customer experiences. We are delighted to have received this funding so we can continue to deepen our product portfolio to support the last-mile of the retail and services industries as they navigate the new normal,” said Tim Andrew, CEO & Co-Founder at Localz.

The Localz platform enables click and collect order management, real-time tracking of the service technician, accurate ETAs, and two-way communication. Localz “on my way” messaging increases customer satisfaction and first-time access rates.

The Localz customer engagement platform is used by global organizations across industries including utilities, retail, grocery, auto repair, building & construction equipment, social housing, property management, and more. Localz’s customers include RAC, HSS Hire, OVO Energy, Autoglass, Rentokil, and Woolworths.

“We are excited to be supporting the team at Localz as they continue to deliver innovative products to the retail and field services markets. We have been particularly impressed with how they have responded to the challenges of the Covid era by building new solutions to help their clients operate and remain open for business,” said Daniel Cardenas-Clark of Triple Point.
