“Trick or Treat” is the artist’s eighth single in a musical career that was publicly launched about two years ago. Of Puerto Rican, Salvadoran and Spanish descent, the bilingual/bicultural songstress began her musical journey performing and recording reggaeton, releasing dance-friendly tracks, and collaborating with popular artists like Swiftondemand and YBN Almighty Jay as well as renowned producers TrackDilla and Cesar Da Emperor (responsible for hits by Tyga and Post Malone).

With Halloween being Jasmine Ortiz’s “absolute favorite holiday,” it was only a matter of time before the singer/songwriter paid homage to the spookiest day of the year. And that she did today by announcing via her label, KGB Records, the release of her new single Trick or Treat, an alternative pop song about the challenges dealing with dating and getting “ghosted”. “Ghosting” is an expression that describes when a love interest stops communicating with a partner with no explanation—in other words, disappearing like a ghost. The song is personal for Jasmine. “Trick or Treat highlights how spooky that feeling can be,” she says.

Penned and produced by Jasmine herself, the single marks a new musical direction for the 20-year-old artist who has gained popularity with her danceable reggaeton tracks. “Trick or Treat belongs in the American alternative pop scene with both an ethereal and electronic feel,” states Jasmine. “I still love reggaeton and learned a lot in the past couple years,” she says. “Now I’m ready for a shift in my career, I want to show people how much more I can do.”

In her new single, she does it all—writing, producing, playing and programming instruments, selecting loops and more. “This song is 100 percent me,” she says with pride in her voice.

Trick or Treat is a product of the scary times the world is currently facing due to the global pandemic, when creatives suddenly found themselves hunkered down at home for safety. In isolation in her hometown of Stroudsburg, PA or the Poconos, Jasmine found herself experimenting with new sounds and producing more music.

While “Ghosting is a scary reality of dating in 2020,” admits Jasmine, she didn’t want heartbreak and disillusion be the focus in her lyrics. Instead, she conjures the fun spirit of modern day Halloween to deliver a message to a lover who disguises his true intention and disappears with no explanation. Also, very cleverly, she doesn’t allow the song to be dated for October’s scary season. After all, date ghosting happens all year long. “My song goes well beyond Halloween,” she says.

The video for Trick or Treat recreates scenes from some of Jasmine’s favorite horror flicks, such as ItPsycho and The Shining. The video is directed by Jasmine’s mother, Maria Picon, who also happens to be a filmmaker. “Unpopular opinion, but I think horror films can be really funny sometimes,” she quips.

Jasmine’s new single arrives at a pivotal time in her career. She is currently a student at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where she is majoring in music with a minor in political science. With classes going online due to the Covid-19 crisis, she decided to take advantage of the opportunity and move to Los Angeles to expand her musical horizons. An adventurer by nature, Jasmine packed up what she could fit into one suitcase and traveled cross-country in an SUV to follow her dreams.

“I’m here to pursue my greatest passion in life,” says Jasmine. “I started playing piano at age three, singing at six, and writing songs at eight. I’ve been doing music my whole life and I have many more songs to share.”

Todd Carrico joins us as Director of the Houston office from SBM Offshore, where he served as the Technology and Business Development Manager, focusing on early project development for the SBM Offshore Houston Regional Center. Prior to SBM Offshore, Todd was the Seakeeping Division Model Experimentation Branch Head at NSWC Carderock, where he was responsible for complex model test programs, including DDG 1000 and the Orion Recovery test programs. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. Additionally, he holds a Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of New Orleans. Starting on November 16, midwives will only be available at the hospital 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, essentially cutting their in-hospital weekday availability in half. They will be accessible 24 hours a day during the weekends only.

The cuts come at a time when Cape Cod Hospital’s maternity unit is seeing marked increases in the number of babies it is delivering. This increase is, in larger part, due to the influx of pregnant woman who would have previously been cared for at Falmouth Hospital. But with the closure of that hospital’s maternity unit in April, expectant moms in the area are now delivering in Hyannis. Also having a significant impact on those delivery numbers is the overall population increase the Cape has seen due to COVID-19 and people looking to temporarily relocate from more densely populated areas while the pandemic plays out.

The absence of midwives during weekday shifts means that expectant mothers who have chosen to be under the care of a midwife will no longer have access to those same care providers during their labor and delivery — unless a soon-to-be mother is lucky enough to go into labor either at night or on a weekend. Otherwise, new babies will be delivered by obstetricians.

For the maternity nurses at Cape Cod Hospital, who work alongside with both doctors and midwives, this is an unnecessary and unfortunate change in practice. Some expectant mothers do require the care of obstetricians, either due to their high-risk status prior to delivery or because of an urgent matter that arises during labor. But many expectant mothers have low-risk pregnancies and opt for midwifery care. This allows mothers to have more say in their birthing plans, resulting in labors and deliveries that are less clinical, more holistic, and generally non-invasive.

The announcement of these cuts has shocked many nurses and clinicians at the hospital. Not only have deliveries been on the rise, but the hospital has continued running promotions that tout its women’s health and midwife programs. Meanwhile, nurses report that there has been no clear communication with the public about the hospital’s looming changes.

“When CCHC closed the maternity unit at Falmouth, we knew we would see a significant increase in deliveries in Hyannis,” said Michelle Walsh, RN. “At the very least we have been expecting to deliver 300 more babies this year. Little did we know that CCHC would make things worse by cutting patients’ access to midwives at a time when the Cape’s lone maternity unit is already understaffed and overwhelmed.”

The closure of the maternity unit at Falmouth was strongly opposed by local nurses, clinicians, patients, and advocates, and following a public hearing on the matter the Department of Public Health (DPH) deemed the unit and the services it provides as essential. But the DPH does not have the authority to prevent such closures and CCHC charged ahead with shuttering the Falmouth unit.

The Falmouth closure, and now these pending cuts to the midwifery practice at Cape Cod Hospital, follow the recent elimination of maternity services at Morton Hospital in Taunton and Tobey Hospital in Wareham. As a result, the March of Dimes has classified this region of the state as a “maternity desert” for the lack of access to adequate obstetrical care.
