Delhi-NCR to get Metro on Track

Delhi Metro Services is halted since 22 March in Delhi. However, reports suggest that the service is most likely to resume in Delhi and the National capital region from 1 September amid Unlock 4.0. There are possibilities that the benefits may continue at 50% capacity at first. There will be no token system; hence passengers will need to get used to the contactless system for ticketing.

However, the authorities have still imposed the lockdown. Things that will remain shut include schools, colleges, theatres, auditorium. As per several reports, officials may allow bars to sell liquor for takeaway.

Unlock 4.0 in Bengaluru

Karnata has relaxed its restrictions on interstate travel. Officials are most likely to resume pubs and bars in Bengaluru. The move is likely to offer significant relief to the hospitality sector in Bengaluru. However, there are no reports regarding the restarting cinema halls and educational institutes. The city’s metro services have been shut for over five months, waiting for the government’s green light.

Bi-weekly Lockdown in Kolkata

The domestic flights from hotspots of COVID-19 are to resume from 1 September. However, Kolkata is still living under a complete lockdown bi-weekly. Only essential services will be allowed during the time. There are no signs of the opening of schools and colleges until 20 September. The reports suggest that pubs and clubs are likely to open from next month.

Unlock 4.0 in Mumbai

All shops and malls got a green flag to remain open throughout the week in August. There are also high requests to open gyms and gardens. However, Mumbaikar may learn to live without local trains for some more time. Currently, local trains are only available for those who are part of essential services.

Furthermore, the local police of Mumbai are determined to keep the outdoor activities at minimal. They have also warned the locals that if they cannot justify their reasons for being out, they will impound vehicles.

Unlock 4.0 in Chennai

Subramanian Swaminathan, a Chennai-based contagious diseases expert, alleged recently that the city’s COVID-19 growth rate was “past its peak”. However, the Chennai state government is not likely to take risks. Despite the Centre’s directive, people will continue to need e-passes for an inter-state and inter-district transfer. The restrictions on office-goers, liquor shops, and hotels, amongst others, maybe relieved.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk overtakes Bill Gates to become the world’s second-richest person. Musk’s net worth soared from $7.2 billion to $127.9 billion, driven by yet another surge in Tesla’s share price.  Bill Gates’ net worth is currently $127.7 billion.

Since the beginning of 2020, Musk has added $100.3 billion to his net worth, the most of anyone on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a ranking of the world’s 500 richest people. Musk was ranked 35th in January.

In June, Tesla surpasses Toyota to become the world’s most valuable car company. Tesla stock eclipsed $1,000 per share valuing the company at $188 billion. Now, Tesla is worth more than GM, Ford, Ferrari, BMW, Nissan, Mazda, Aston Martin, and Fiat Chrysler, which have a combined worth of $181 billion. Today, Tesla’s market value approaches $500 billion.

In September, Elon Musk’s net worth quadrupled from $25 billion to over $100 billion during the 4 months. Musk’s advance up the wealth ranks has been driven largely by Tesla. About three-quarters of his net worth is in Tesla shares, which are valued more than four times as much as his stake in Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX.

Gates’ net worth of $127.7 billion would have been much higher had he not donated to charities over the years. Gates has given more than $27 billion to his foundation since 2006.

Over the five years, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been using mass surveillance to monitor and track the lives of its citizens. Back in March, we wrote a piece about how a small unknown tech startup is helping the Chinese government to deploy new AI facial recognition technology to surveil its citizens.

Then in September, the Chinese government moved beyond facial recognition technology. Working with China’s largest 5G smartphone maker, the Chinese government rolled out 5G as a surveillance infrastructure to track and rank all citizens using A.I.

Now the Chinese government now wants to seize on the coronavirus pandemic as an opportunity to not only monitor and surveil the Chinese citizens but also to people around the world. In an online meeting of heads of state from the world’s 20 largest economies, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a “global mechanism” that would use QR codes to open up international travel.

“We need to further harmonise policies and standards and establish ‘fast tracks’ to facilitate the orderly flow of people,” he said.

Addressing the G20 summit on Saturday night, President Xi said the QR codes will be used to help establish a traveller’s health status. However, Human Rights advocates warned that QR code could be abused and could be used for “broader political monitoring and exclusion.”

Xi added that a global mechanism involving mutual recognition of health certificates, including nucleic acid test results in the form of QR codes, could be used to enable cross-border travel.

“We hope more countries will join this mechanism. “We need to further standardise policies and establish fast tracks to facilitate the orderly flow of people.”

QR codes are barcodes that hold information that can be scanned and read by smartphones. The use of mobile phone QR codes to prove health status and travel records have been mandatory for all Chinese citizens since coronavirus pandemic began to spread in February. In China, users are issued a traffic-light style health code, with a green code allowing someone to travel freely, and an orange or red code indicating that they need to quarantine for up to two weeks.

The QR code technology used to track and monitor people was developed by financial technology giant Ant Financial, The code is available through its main app Alipay, but also on WeChat, which belongs to Alipay’s competitor Tencent. At this point, it is not clear whether other countries would join China in the use of global QR code system as a way of testing and tracking people.

With governments around the world imposing a new round of lockdowns to stem the tide of the second wave of coronavirus, Dr. Mike Yeadon, the former Chief Science Officer for the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer says “there is no science to suggest a second wave should happen.” Dr. Yeadon said that false-positive results from inherently unreliable COVID tests are being used to manufacture a “second wave” based on “new cases.”

To date, the coronavirus pandemic which started in Wuhan, China in December 2019 has killed nearly 1.4 million people worldwide with at least 253,600 American lives died from the deadly virus.

Dr. Michael Yeadon is an Allergy & Respiratory Therapeutic Area expert. With a degree in biochemistry and toxicology and a research-based Ph.D. in respiratory pharmacology from the University of Surrey (UK) in 1988., Dr. Mike Yeadon spent over 30 years leading new medicines research in some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

He worked for Pfizer for 16 years before in 2011 as Vice President & Chief Scientist for Allergy & Respiratory. Since leaving Pfizer, Dr. Yeadon has founded his own biotech company, Ziarco, which was sold to the world’s biggest drug company, Novartis, in 2017.

In an interview with Julia Hartley-Brewer, Dr. Yeadon said the Government is “using a test with an undeclared false positive rate.” He said that he wants those who have tested positive for coronavirus to be tested again to eliminate the possibility of the test being a false positive.

Even if all positives were to be correct, Dr. Yeadon explained that given the “shape” of all important indicators in a worldwide pandemic, such as hospitalizations, ICU utilization, and deaths, “the pandemic is fundamentally over.”

“Were it not for the test data that you get from the TV all the time, you would rightly conclude that the pandemic was over, as nothing much has happened. Of course people go to the hospital, moving into the autumn flu season…but there is no science to suggest a second wave should happen,”  Yeadon said in the interview.

You can watch the video of his interview below.

Back in September, Dr. Yeadon also co-authored a paper with two of his colleagues. In the paper, which is titled: “How Likely is a Second wave?” they explained:

“It has widely been observed that in all heavily infected countries in Europe and several of the US states likewise, that the shape of the daily deaths vs. time curves is similar to ours in the UK. Many of these curves are not just similar, but almost super imposable.”

Dr. Yeadon and the two scientists also looked at the national weekly mortality data from the UK to see the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. They used the data of the past four years for comparison purposes and to calculate upper and lower control limits (based on two standard deviations).

Below is how they described their findings:

This shows that in the pandemic peak (April 17th to 30th) more than twice the number of seasonal average deaths occurred, with the number of deaths above the upper control limit from March 27th through to June 12th, totalling 44,895 excess deaths. Since June 26th the number of weekly deaths has now fallen so it is not only below the weekly average but has regularly dropped below the lower control limit, showing that we are now at the lowest number of weekly deaths recorded in many years.

Based on their study, they found that “over the last three months since lockdown measures started easing on the May 10th there has been no increase in weekly deaths. On the contrary, these have continued to fall.

Dr. Yeadon further pointed out that the “novel” COVID-19 contagion is novel only in the sense that it is a new type of coronavirus. But, he said, there are presently four strains that circulate freely throughout the population, most often linked to the common cold.

Yeadon et al added:

“There are at least four well characterised family members (229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1) which are endemic and cause some of the common colds we experience, especially in winter. They all have striking sequence similarity to the new coronavirus.”

Toward the end of the paper, Dr. Yeadon and the two other scientists also addressed the sudden surge in coronavirus cases and what is happening in terms of second wave concerns in France and Spain. They “contend that the many claims in the media for outbreaks, spikes, and second waves are all artifacts of amplified rates of testing.”

“It should be noted that illness, hospitalisations and deaths have not reversed in any clear and sustained manner. Specifically, careful examination of the weekly all-causes mortality data in France is completely clear. Six weeks into an apparent surge of cases, the number of deaths remain completely flat and normal, in all age bands (as of mid-August when this document was written).”

The authors concluded with recent charts of daily cases from the two countries to further support their claim that the second wave is over.
